Flickr Fiction
In an attempt to inspire myself I came up with a writing game/exercise using Flickr. Flickr has a very cool ‘interestingness’ feature whereby pictures are rated by their, well inherent interestingness. If you visit this link you can view a random sample of interesting photos posted in the last seven days. I spent about an hour on there last night hitting the reload button.
The photos are stunning to say the least. There are some incredibly talented photographers using Flickr. Anyway the idea behind the game is an old one, find a photo that strikes a chord and write a flash fiction piece on it. I’m calling it ‘Flickr Fiction’ although ‘Fliction’ also occurred to me. Both terms turned up Google hits and it appears there is a ‘Fliction’ group on Flickr where they write the fiction pieces in the photo comments section. My idea is to blog the photos directly from Flickr and add the fiction piece beneath.
My only concern is whether the Flickr users whose photos I wish to display will allow it. I don’t want to breach any copyrights so if I can blog the photo I will, if not I will insert a link to the photo that inspired the piece.
I will be posting some of the pieces over the next few days. I know there are a few other scribblers out there reading this and I’m wondering if anyone would be interested in doing some sort of Flickr Fiction group thing. What I had in mind was to pick a photo each week on a round robin basis and away we go. Drop me a line if you’re interested.
Also bear with me, some of what is to follow will probably be terrible.

[...] I will be posting mine up shortly and will add links to the others as they come online. As I mentioned in my original Flickr Fiction post newcomers are welcome. [...]

[...] Inspired by this photo on flickr and this post from the Gurrier, I hereby present the my first Flickr Fiction attempt. The idea is that those of us who participate in this (currently just myself, the Gurrier and the Gin Lady) write something for a particular photo on flickr and post it on our blogs on Friday. The deal is that I don’t read their post and they don’t read mine until after we have written and posted our own. This one is very rushed, quick and nasty, my bad. i might re qork it into something proper at a later stage. So, on to it anyway… [...]

Wow Andrew I’m impressed. I’ve been working my way through your collection and I’m hooked. I really liked the story with the girl and the cremated old man.
Are you planning on writing anymore and how goes the plan to publish them?

Thanks Donal. I’ve got a few more beginnings rattling around my hard drive - and I have an agent approaching publishers for publication in 2007. Will let you know how I get on.
