Signs the good times are well and truly over, Tesco Value Pesto.

The Celtic Tiger’s dead and gone,
It’s with auld Bertie in the grave.

Actually, I’m somewhat surprised to learn that pesto has crossed into the public awareness to the point where it’s worth Tesco’s while to do a “value” version of it: pesto always struck me as the kind of aspirational foodstuff favoured by Celtic Tiger cubs to demonstrate how they’re a cut above the rest of us, and who would refuse to buy the “value” variety, even it were proven by mass spectroscopy to be identical to a more expensive brand (I doubt this, BTW; I suspect it’s made of grass clippings and sump oil) The hoors probably buy it on the sly and decant it into an old Lloyd Grossman jar when they get it home…

Yeah, I remember the old ‘Yellow Pack’ and ‘Thrift’ brands back in the eighties and it was all all Orange Pop, Crisps, Dog Food, White Bread. All the staples of a good Irish diet. Now it’s Value Pesto and Ciabatta’s. Weird and tectonic social shifts have occurred these past few years.
