Flickr Fiction

Flickr Fiction is a writing game I came up with using the photo sharing site Flickr. It has gathered a modest following over the past couple of months and I am creating this page as a reference point for any readers who may wish to join in. Participation is open to all.

Here’s how we do it:

One piece of flash fiction per week based on a random photo chosen from Flickr. Fiction can be of any length from 50, 500, 5000 words, whatever you want. Flickr Fiction piece to be posted on your website on a Friday. If possible do not to read other participants pieces before you post yours. The idea is to see what kind of story everyone comes up with without being influenced by each other.

With regard to licensing and displaying the photos, if the photo is released under a Creative Commons (CC) license we display it on our blogs with proper attribution (usually a link to the Flickr user will suffice) if the photo is set to “All Rights Reserved” we do not display it but include a link to the photo’s Flickr page at the end of the post. See an example of fiction pieces with a CC Licensed Photo and Non CC Licensed Photo.

You can check out the license a photo is released under on by visiting its page on Flickr and looking down in the right hand corner under the tags section (see the screen grab below).

CC Licensing

Once all the pieces are posted up on their respective blogs everyone should link to and comment on all participants fiction pieces.

That’s it. The idea behind this is merely a bit of fun and some exercise for the brain muscles. Drop me a line if you’re interested to murphy(at)thegurrier.com replace the (at) with @, you know the drill.
